Hi All,
So Tiscali sucks - but the big question is - who do we go to?
I've been with tiscali for 3-4 years - no problems at all - only 2 outages in that time - each for an hour or so (used to play and run 10 hour flight campaigns in IL2 every sunday)...
Since i got my missus into EvE (yes i do think i should get a medal) we have had this packet filtering causing both of us connection problems... Wondering if downloading 2x clients - flagged my line as "high usage"... I asked if they could tell me how much i have used over the last few months - or even the last month - they couldn't tell me... Which is BS...
Like most - i don't get home until 6pm - i normally head off to bed around 10-11 (up at 6 the next morning)... which is classed as "peak hours"...
Now - i've been on the phone to them 3 times - 1st guy hung up after i stated it was packet filtering, been in support for 7 years blah blah... That was a 40 minute call - 30minutes on hold waiting for an analyst...
2nd time - the guy didn't have a clue - so i sang, yes sang "let me speaaaak to yourrrr supervisorrrrr - you don't haaave a clueeeee" in no particular tone - repeatidly... After 10 minutes i spoke to the "supervisor"... A little more clearly spoken English was all the difference i noticed... They say "you can not play this during peak hours - please try out of peak hours"...
I can't do it out of peak hours as i am either at work or asleep...
How can you restrict - my unlimited account - without notifying me - they said - Do not play this game during peak hours...
I've got someone calling me at home at 7pm tonight - which i am sure will prove pointless...
So in advance - who should i be looking at for service..? BT, PlusNet, Utility WareHouse, etc...
I wish there was a dedicated group of ISPs - one for film/music downloads (i don't do)one ISP for Mail/surfing (which is what work lunch break is for) - then one dedicated to games (i'd be using that one at home)...
Heck - i'd even pay 30 quid if the damned thing worked...
One question i will ask tiscali and any other ISP - do you packet filter on Business Lines? If they don't - i will change there and then - regardless of cost... I live in the sticks - so 1MB is the fasted i can go - how expensive could any package be with that speed? hehehe...
I'll let you know...
Cheers,

oook, if you are with Tiscali - and you have been for over a year - with the same package - you can run-away...
I'm going for Fast.co.uk...
Fast - 3 rings - English human - same number for tech-support = great
tiscali - 30minutes of music before you hear some noise on the other end that is ment to be a support tech... as soon as you say "Eve" or "Gaming" - you get "Hello? hello? - click as they hang-up...
i requested my MAC code - upto 5 days - via e-mail and text'd to my phone (just incase they can't take down details properly)...
can't cancel my phone service with them until i sign up for another one (automated apprently)...
This is how:
I called cancelations - after confirming who i was - they asked how they can help - i replied: MAC code please...
Lady asked why - i replied because my unlimited broadband is limited to the point i can't do what i have been doing for 3 years and your solution was to do it out of peak times - which is when i'm either at work or asleep...
Lady asked - would you like me to put you through to our technical support <giggling to myself> i replied: your technical support is not worth the wages they are paid... She said my MAC code will be with me in 5 days...
plus - i will get charged a whole month - for the 5 days until i get my MAC code... I'm cancelling my DD - so they will have to bill me - that way i pay for what i used/couldn't use... i'll fight the thieving gits for that...
Any-hoo - glad this is changing - i'll let you know of any hick-ups...
Be strong fellow tisca-cancel-ors - better to leave the dying rat than put up with it...
May the force be with you all,

speaking of dial-up - has anyone tried it?
wondering if it might be worth a go...
That would be a great "youtube" video - demonstrating the "upto 8MB" is worse than Dial-up during peak times... Would be a funny video if you included the phone calls to support as "back ground music"...
If you got the skills - get it done - then post the link :P
As mentioned above - it is probably the start of a trend - but there are the odd ISP that currently don't give any restraints - FAST.CO.UK seems to be a good choice - but let me try it out before you all rush there...
There is a european arguement going on at the moment - Holland for example has one of the best infrastructures - charging less than what we pay - BT still uses infrastructure that has been inplace since the 1940's rollout... go figure...
I think tiscali in other countries is ok - (from work clients which vpn - no games on work machines) - it could just be the UK...
If your from further afield - let us know...
If the european arguement gets to court - expect big changes...

I cancelled tiscali - 3 days got MAC code - went for Fast.co.uk...
Last friday night - no internet - called Fast.co.uk - 2 rings - spoke to the guy - he said - yes - you are with us now :)
He gave me my details - which were stuck in my hotmail account (no net - no mail)...
Entered the garbled username and password into my netgear - kaaa-pow online...
I had an IP change on Sunday night - other than that - no outage - no "server could not be fouond" or "client didn't perform the secure handshake in the required time" messages :)
Missus and I on 2 machines - on EVE - no issues :)
Plus - my router says i now get 3.7 download - better than tiscali - who gave me 1mb :)
If you are with Tiscali - just leave - they have breached your contrac t- not you...
every where i go - i will deter all users from Tiscali...
I still can't believe after a few years with them - they c**k up like that - out of the blue...
tiscali = a need to change ISP...
If your parents pay for your ISP - say that it's more secure with BT or Fast.co.uk or any others - which i'm sure they'll think of your saftey as a minor...
if not - tie their shoe laces up every morning until they cave in...

oh - and for pricing - i went for 2gb download limit option to start - as i only download patches for games - so don't need uber connection - fast is the same as the package i was on with Tiscali - except fast is (pardon the pun) faster and doesn't filter or monitor...
well, they don't actively monitor - passivley they get a flag if you go over your download limit - then call you up to make sure this isn't regular... As i'll only be doing patches - i don't see i will clock up the download...
